Eni ups resource estimate for Mexico’s Area 1

Eni now estimates Area 1 in Mexico’s Campeche Bay to contain between 1.4 to 2 billion boe – 90% of which is oil -- thanks to Eni’s successful Tecoalli-2 well and revision to the reservoir models for the Amoca and Mitzon fields.

Located approximately 200km west of Ciudad del Carmen in 33m of water, Tecoalli-2 hit approximately 40m of net oil pay in the Orca formation after reaching final depth of 4420m. Eni then encountered an additional 27m of net oil pay after deepening the well to the Cinco Presidentes formation exploratory target.

The Tecoalli field sits 24km from the Amoca field and 13km from the Mizton field. In July, Eni boosted the resource estimate for Amoca to 1 billion boe due to results of the successful Amoca-3 well.

Eni will submit shortly the Area 1 development plan to Mexico’s Comision Nacional de Hidrocarburos. Once it receives approval, Eni will sanction the development. The company plans to start production in the first half of 2019.

The company holds rights in four exploration and production blocks in Mexico’s Sureste Basin as operator, including Area 1, which it obtained in 2015’s Round 1.2. The others are Block 7 (Eni 45%), Block 10 (Eni 100%), and Block 14 (Eni 60%), which the company was awarded in this year’s Round 2.1.
