Cairn Energy's second planned exploration well offshore Senegal is underway, the firm said today (30 October).
The SNE-1 probe on the Sangomar Deep Block follows Cairn's successful FAN-1 well, on the same block, which struck oil early October and has the potential to be a "significant standalone development," Cairn said at the time.
SNE-1 is being drilled using Transocean's Cajun Express semisubmersible drilling rig, which also drilled FAN-1.
Cairn's partner Far Ltd has said SNE-1 is targeting prospective unrisked best estimate resources of 600MMbo.
Simon Thomson, Cairn's CEO, said: "Cairn remains focused on maximising value for shareholders from disciplined capital allocation across a balanced asset base. Operations are now underway on our second well in Senegal after oil was discovered in the basin opening FAN-1 well. We have a large acreage position and are in the process of evaluating the initial well information and determining potential follow up activity which we are currently targeting for 2015."
