Oil major BP has signed an agreement to explore for oil and gas offshore in Gabon, a company spokesperson said on Thursday.

"BP can confirm it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the government of Gabon to explore for offshore oil and gas."

On October 22 Exxon Mobil announced a similar non-binding agreement with Gabon, a member of OPEC, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
