BG Group lay offs hit Houston

Published

The Houston BG Group office will close by the end of the year, and layoff a total of 154 jobs, with the majority set to be cut late next month.

According to a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, 118 employees will be laid off on 31 August. The remaining 36 employees will complete transaction activities before being laid off on 30 September.

BG said in the letter that the company intends to offer severance benefits and outplacement services to affected employees.

When Shell took over BG Group earlier this year in February, the supermajor warned that some 10,000 staff and contract positons would be cut from both companies.

In May, Shell announced 475 job cuts from its UK and Ireland businesses by the end of the year.

"In 2016, the number of job reductions in response to low prices and as a result of the BG integration is expected to total at least 5000 globally. This number includes the 2800 integration-related roles previously announced,” Paul Goodfellow, VP for UK & Ireland said in May.

Shell completed the BG mega merger in mid-February.
