Det norske oljeselskap's wildcat exploration well 2/9-5S on the Heimdalshø prospect found no hydrocarbons.
Det norske said the well, the first in production license (PL) 494, about 30 km east of the Norwegian North Sea Valhall field, was the first well to test a new play concept in the Mandal High area, where Johan Sverdrup and Utsira High is the analogue.
The purpose of the well was to prove petroleum in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks and secondary to prove sandstones with hydrocarbons in the pre-Jurassic rocks.
The well encountered a few thin sandstones with reservoir quality in the main target and only few and thin sandstones in the secondary target. No traces of hydrocarbons were proven.
Well 2/9-5S was drilled in 65m water depth by the jackup drilling rig Maersk Giant (pictured), which will now go to the Yme field, operated by Talisman.
Det norske is operator of PL494 with 30% interest, alongside partners are Dana Petroleum (24%), Fortis Petroleum (16%), Spike Exploration (15%) and Tullow Oil (15%).
