Baker Hughes issued the June 2014 international rotary drilling rig count this week, showing a total of 1344 rigs operating outside the US & Canada in June.
International activity was down 6 rigs from the 1350 rigs drilling in May 2014, but up 11 rigs from the 1333 drilling in June 2013 (0.8% year-over-year increase).
Worldwide offshore
Offshore operations were steady, but flat, with 320 rigs operating offshore internationally in June, down 6 from the 326 rigs drilling in May, and down 17 rigs from a year ago.
Regionally, the high points are significant increases in drilling activity offshore Middle East (+18.6%) and in Asia-Pacific (+6.4%) both up from a year ago. All other regions showed year-over-year decreases in offshore rig counts.
There were 51 rigs drilling offshore Middle East in June, up 4 rigs from May, but up 8 rigs from the 43 rigs drilling in June 2013 (+18.6% year-over-year increase).
There were 115 rigs working offshore Asia-Pacific in June, up 3 rigs from May, but up 7 rigs from the 108 rigs drilling in June 2013 (+6.4% year-over-year increase).
Down, year-over-year
The largest drop, year-over-year, was in Latin America, where 70 rigs were drilling offshore in June, down 1 rig from May, but down 25 rigs from June 2013 (-26% year-over-year decrease).
The next-largest drop was in the North Sea, where 35 rigs were drilling offshore in June, down from 46 rigs in May, and down 9 rigs from May 2013 (-20.5% year-over-year decrease).
In Africa, there were 36 rigs drilling offshore in June, down 4 rigs from May, and also down 4 rigs from the 40 rigs drilling in May 2013 (-10% year-over-year decrease).
Finally, in Europe, there were 48 rigs drilling offshore in June, down 8 rigs from May, and down 3 rigs from June 2013 (-5.9% year-over-year decrease).
