“Mexico’s first call for Round 2 will be published before the end of July and will consist of 15 blocks for exploration and extraction in shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico,” Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, the Head of the Ministry of Energy (SENER) said.

Coldwell confirmed the first call for Round 2.1 at the Mexico Petroleum Congress currently being held in Monterrey this week, in addition to the highly anticipated deepwater round on 5 December.

The deepwater round, Coldwell said, will be held under the highest transparency to attract companies with the capital and technology required to explore and extract oil and gas resources. He also confirmed that there are already 24 registered companies for the round, including Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

Mexico’s deepwater round includes 10 deepwater exploration blocks: six in the Salina basin of the Gulf of Mexico and four in the Mexican side of the Perdido belt that are located in the northern section, and cover a total of 8250km at water depths ranging from 500-3000m.

Earlier this month, several big name oil and gas companies were revealed to have registered for bids for the December round including: ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, Statoil, and many more.

Following the first call for Round 2 in July, SENER will announce Round 2.2, consisting of 14 blocks onshore in the Burgos and the Suroeste basins.
