Gas find for Salamander

Salamander Energy has made a potential gas discovery at its North Kendang-1 exploration well inside the South East Sangatta PSC, the company announced on 11 April 2013.

Drilling operations were suspended at the well after encountering high pressure gas. Salamander said that once the well reached the first Upper Micocene reservoir target at 2,533m TVDSS, the well took a significant kick from an influx of high pressure gas into the well bore at a wellhead pressure of circa 4,000psi.

Salamander used Diamond Offshore's Ocean General semisubmersible rig to spud the North Kendang-1 well in February. The well was eventually drilled to 2,535m TVDSS. Salamander said the gas has been sampled and its initial test results point to wet gas. Pressure data indicates a potentially significant column height.

The Ocean General will now move on to the Bontang PSC to begin drilling the Bedug-1 exploration well in the North Kutei basin; however, the company reviewing a possible return to North Kendang-1 as part of the current drilling campaign.

"Finding wet gas at North Kendang is highly encouraging for continued exploration in the North Kutei basin, though further drilling will be required to determine reservoir quality and a range of hydrocarbon volumes," said James Menzies, Chief Executive of Salamander. "As the well results are integrated into the geological model and technical evaluation continues, we will drill the Bedug prospect with a view to returning to North Kendang thereafter."

North Kendang-1 is the second well in Salamander’s multi-well program in the North Kutei basin and follows on from the oil and gas discovery at the South Kecapi-1 well previously announced in February.
