Umbilicals International invests in cables

Umbilicals International (UI), part of the Seanamic Group, has invested over US$2 million in new cable manufacturing lines at its Houston production facility. The two lines will streamline cable production, and marks a significant expansion of the company’s dynamic cable manufacturing capability.

UI designs and manufactures high performance cable, hose and umbilical systems for subsea oil and gas field development, oceanographic and environmental research and naval defense. The new machines are a 56 position dual purpose planetary cabling and armoring line and a 12 position large reel capacity cabling line suitable for production of dynamic cables of 4km and longer.

“Remotely operated vehicles (ROV), blowout preventer (MUX) control cable and tow cables of lengths up to 4km are now becoming the norm,” said Colin Zak, UI CEO. “We are one of the few companies with the ability to make dynamic armored cables at these lengths.”

Umbilicals International cables and umbilicals are designed specifically for dynamic, load bearing applications where frequent deployment and recovery of the attached system is required. The critical nature of these systems including life support in the case of manned diving demands the highest level of product engineering and quality assurance.
