Ithaca, NHV sign Harrier contract

The NHV Group has been awarded a contract with Ithaca Energy UK (Ithaca) to provide helicopter services in support of their upcoming drilling project at the Harrier Well in Block 30/6. The operations are expected to start Q2 2017. Flights will depart from NHV’s base in Aberdeen to the Harrier Well, which is approximately 150nm from Aberdeen.

NHV will support this project utilizing the H175 aircraft, an Airbus Helicopter’s Super Medium type, which is specifically designed to meet evolving mission needs in the oil and gas industry. 

Operations out of Aberdeen by NHV started at the beginning of 2016 and the opening of a new hangar, apron and passenger handling facilities was announced last October. A third H175 helicopter will now be allocated to the Aberdeen base. Ultimately, NHV will increase its fleet to 16 of these new-generation helicopters.

Oceaneering wins Statoil E-ROV contract

Statoil has awarded a subsidiary of Oceaneering International a technology development contract to provide the development, manufacturing, testing, and mobilization of a self-contained, battery-powered work class remotely operated vehicle (E-ROV) system deployed on the seabed of the North Sea. 

The system will interface with Oceaneering’s onshore Mission Support Center via a 4G mobile broadband signal transmitted from a buoy on the water’s surface, without a surface vessel required onsite.

Development, manufacturing, and pool testing will start immediately at Oceaneering’s workshop in Stavanger, Norway.

An offshore mobilization test of the system is scheduled for May 2017.  During the test, the E-ROV system will be deployed and recovered from a Statoil-operated IMR vessel at the Troll field in the North Sea. The system will perform specified subsea operations while Oceaneering maintains continuous, uninterrupted control from its onshore Mission Support Center in Stavanger.

“We are pleased Statoil has given us the opportunity to develop a revolutionary, battery-powered work class E-ROV system. This award provides opportunities for continuous improvements and developments that will create increased value for both parties. We will use our Oceaneering eNovus work class ROV and new technology to supply the required battery power and communication links needed to support the project,” said Erik H. Sæstad, VP and country manager for Oceaneering in Norway.

Petrobras contracts DOF trio

DOF subsidiary Norskan Offshore has secured three contracts with Brazilian giant Petrobras.

The first, is a one plus one year contract for the Skandi Botafogo, which is set to start 15 February. Skandi Botafogo is an anchor handling tug supply vessel, UT 722L, built in Brazil.

Norskan further secured two contracts with Petrobras for the Skandi Leblon and Skandi Flamengo for 365 days and 668 days, respectively.

The vessels are both platform supply vessels sold in 2015, however Norskan retained market risk on contract renewal for these vessels after sale.

"It is very satisfactory that Norskan continues to secure long-term contracts for our Brazilian fleet," said Mons S. Aase, CEO, DOF. "In 2016 we had low utilization for Skandi Flamengo. These new awards secures a higher backlog for these vessels in 2017 compared to 2016."

LR starts Subsea Inspection Services

Lloyd’s Register (LR), a provider of integrity, compliance and specialist risk consulting services, has begun its Subsea Inspection Services to support underwater inspections of subsea pipelines, assets and facilities to energy companies operating offshore.

Services include project management, consultancy, personnel, quality control, data processing and data management, applicable to remotely operated vehicle, autonomous underwater vehicle and diver projects. They

Headed by Andrew Inglis, subsea inspection manager, LR, services will be provided to operators and contractors in the offshore oil and gas, wind farm and submarine cable sectors. 

“LR has significant capability and experience within the subsea sector including management of a wide range of offshore projects and operations across the energy mix,” said Inglis. “By uniting this expertise and experience with our focus upon safety, quality and cost-efficiency, we aim to be the preferred subsea inspection management supplier for our clients.”

Growth is forecast in all of these areas with research by Rystad Energy – one of Norway’s strategy consultancy companies – highlighting that subsea installations will increase production levels in the oil and gas sector from 15 MMb/d to 35 MMb/d by 2030. It anticipates a rapid recovery in maintenance, modifications and operations expenditure. 

In the offshore wind sector Douglas Westwood highlights that US$215.8 billion (€200 billion) of capital expenditure will result in installed capacity of more than 70GW by 2025, generating significant future operations and maintenance activities.

LR has already delivered subsea inspection contracts for major operators in the North Sea and Trinidad.

“With a good portfolio of work projects on the horizon, we look forward to making sure we actively do our part to help operators achieve their objectives of achieving a safe, efficient and sustainable sector,” said Inglis.

Managed and coordinated in Aberdeen, the Subsea Inspection Service will be delivered to clients in all offshore energy regions through LR’s global network of office locations.

NEL leads multiphase meter standards development

NEL, the flow measurement research and development specialist, has been selected to lead the development of a new multiphase flow measurement standard for the oil and gas industry.  

Despite the growing use of multiphase meters to cope with complex fluid mixtures from ageing fields which have depleting reserves, there is no internationally accepted standard for the testing of multiphase flow meters. The new standard will provide operators and regulatory authorities with more confidence in testing procedures and results, ensuring measurement accuracy and reducing their financial risks. 

Michael Reader-Harris, principal consultant, NEL, has been proposed by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and accepted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to lead a work program to develop a new Technical Report in collaboration with other multiphase experts across the world. 

“Multiphase flow meters were developed in the early 1990s to address the need for the economical development of marginal, deeper and more complex fields,” said Michael Reader-Harris. “While industry recognizes the vital role these meters will play in the shift to subsea production, the international standards required to ensure flow measurement accuracy have not materialized. This burgeoning meter market needs international guidelines, and our project will ensure consistency and reduce risk.”

Aker BP has received consent from Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to remove the emergency response vessel at the Alvheim field.

Aker BP wants the Alvheim field to be included in the area contingency planning for the Sleipner-Utsira area, and has accordingly applied for consent to remove the Alvheim field's emergency response vessel. The PSA has granted Aker BP consent for removal as applied for.

Aker BP is the operator of the Alvheim field in the North Sea, close to the boundary with the UK shelf, around 260km west of Stavanger. Alvheim has been developed using a floating production unit and subsea wells. The Vilje and Volund fields are also tied back to the production unit. The oil from the fields is shipped from Alvheim by tanker and the gas is exported by pipeline to St Fergus in Scotland. Production began in 2008.

Lundin to drill Edvard Grieg SW well

Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has granted Lundin consent to carry out exploration drilling of well 16/1-27 on the Edvard Grieg field in the North Sea.

Lundin is the operator of the Edvard Grieg field, around 140km west-southwest of Stavanger. The field is one of the largest oil fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Production from the field began in 2015.

The well to be drilled is an appraisal well in a structure named Edvard Grieg SW.

Water depth at the site is 138m. Drilling is scheduled to begin on 1 March 2017 and will last 44 days.

The well is to be drilled by the Island Innovator mobile drilling facility. The facility is a type GM4000, delivered by the COSCO Shipyard in China in 2012. It is owned by Island Drilling and operated by Odfjell Drilling.

Repsol Sinopec inks Safe Boreas extension

Repsol Sinopec Resources UK exercised further options with Prosafe to extend the charter of the Safe Boreas semisubmersible accommodation unit by a total of 17 days.

The firm operational period of the Safe Boreas at Montrose A in the UK sector of the North Sea is now through 27 February 2017 with Prosafe continuing with the reduced option periods’ day rate consistent with market conditions.

Repsol Sinopec has the ability to extend the Safe Boreas further through weekly options.

Earlier this month, Repsol Sinopec extended the contract for 21 days.

Cathie opens US office, targets offshore wind

Offshore geoscience and geotechnical engineering consultancy Cathie Associates, has formed a US entity: Cathie Associates Inc in Boston, Massachusetts.

The move is part of the company’s plans for international expansion and will enable them to serve offshore wind development in the US.

David Cathie, CEO and founder of the international consultancy commented: “We have been following the industry for over five years and supporting a number of planned developments; we feel the time is right to demonstrate our future commitment to US offshore wind, and to recognize the importance of local content and American jobs. 

“The creation of our US entity has been in planning for around six months now, so we’re delighted to be able to make this announcement.” 

Gareth Ellery, group business development manager, has been keenly involved in the emergence of offshore wind in the US: “With the construction of the Block Island wind farm and both Dong Energy and Statoil entering the market, momentum is beginning to build. Siemens installs 8 MW turbine

Siemens Wind Power has installed the latest version of its offshore direct drive wind turbine at the national test center in Østerild, Denmark – according to plan.

The SWT-8.0-154 is rated at 8 MW and equipped with the proven 154m diameter rotor. The prototype was certified by DNV GL in January, confirming all relevant safety features for test operation. The new offshore turbine was installed on a steel tower at a hub height of 120m. The prototype will be used for both mechanical and electrical testing. The final type certificate is expected for 2018.

With the full commissioning of the prototype, Siemens will enter the final development phase for the new turbine that allows for up to 10% higher annual energy production (AEP) under offshore wind conditions than the 7-MW model. The upgrade to eight megawatts enables a rated power increase of more than 14% from 7-8 MW.

Similar to the previous upgrade from 6-7 MW, the 8 MW turbine will benefit from the established supply chain and proven offshore direct drive technology components. Since the higher rating will be achieved with only a few component upgrades including a new cooling concept and a new control system, customers will again benefit from key value drivers including fast time-to-market and low risk.

"The installation of the SWT-8.0-154 prototype in Østerild is an important milestone in the success story of our offshore direct drive wind turbines," states Michael Hannibal, CEO Offshore at Siemens Wind Power. "The evolution based on our platform strategy demonstrates that innovation to lower the cost of wind energy can work without compromising the proven reliability of a technically mature product."

The offshore direct drive is the youngest Siemens wind turbine platform. It has already made an impact: Recently 100 years of combined operation were reached with 2.5 TWh of electricity produced. The total energy yield harvested by Siemens offshore direct drive generators installed by the end of 2016, corresponds to the energy demand of all households in the city of Munich for an entire year.

This amount of electricity has been produced in less than six years, starting with the first SWT-6.0-120 prototype to large offshore projects now in operation like Westermost Rough in the UK and Gode Wind in German waters. At the same time Siemens’ Offshore Direct Drive platform helped to avoid 1,250,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. This corresponds to the emission of all cars in a city the size of Munich over a period of four months. The latest model SWT-8.0-154 is expected to enter serial production in 2019.

Currently approximately 150 Siemens offshore direct drive wind turbines have been handed over to customers. More than 600 units of Siemens’ offshore direct drive wind turbines have been sold since the launch of the large gearless turbine in 2011. The innovative product platform incorporates the unique technical experience from more than 2300 installed offshore turbines and nearly 1300 onshore direct-drive wind turbines.
