Balmoral releases HT thermal insulation systems

Balmoral Offshore Engineering has introduced a range of high temperature thermal insulation systems suitable for use on subsea Christmas trees, manifolds, spool pieces and jumpers, etc.

High temperature-rated silicone, urethane alloy, and epoxy materials form the core of the thermal insulation portfolio. 

“2015 and 2016 has been Balmoral Offshore Engineering’s busiest period in terms of thermal insulation projects,” said Bob Oram, technical director. “We have contributed to a number of projects including Pierce and Blackbird in the UK North Sea, Shah Deniz in the Caspian, Lucius Deepwater in the Gulf of Mexico, Baobab offshore Cote d’ Ivoire, the Ten project in Ghana, and the OYO phase II project in Nigeria.”

Proprietary laboratory, hydrostatic and mechanical testing facilities enable Balmoral to research, identify, and develop cost effective materials across a spectrum of applications.

Despite current market conditions Balmoral continues to invest heavily in technology, manufacturing processes, and product development. Installing state of the art technology is key to driving production efficiencies and reducing lead times. In addition, Balmoral has expanded its subsea test center, which services the developing requirements of clients and that of the wider market.

OES, SCM join strategic partnership

Strategic Corrosion Management (SCM), an asset integrity firm, has joined with OES Oilfield Services Group, an oilfield inspection company, in a global strategic partnership, which will integrate the companies’ RISCm (Risk, Integrity, and Strategic Corrosion Management) and DOPP (Dropped Objects Prevention Program) tool-sets. This partnership aims to help businesses enhance safety, increase asset lifespan, reduce costs, and increase productivity. 

SCM was launched in the UK in 1985 and is a specialist in all aspects of corrosion management and consultancy services. This partnership will broaden the offering of SCM’s ‘360integrity’ framework, an integrated approach to integrity management, which combines SCM’s consultancy expertise and RISCm software to offer a corrosion, integrity, and fabric maintenance management solution.

360integrity is envisaged to ‘wrap-around’ a facility, offering asset managers the ability to decrease corrosion risks and reduce the cost of maintenance.

RISCm is made up of a number of parts, deployed in a modular way bringing together all of the relevant information about a plant’s condition, regardless of its source. By visualizing the plant data, asset managers can draw from it normally unavailable intelligence about a plant’s condition, the physical risks present, and the maintenance efficiencies available.

OES’s dropped object management software, DOPP, is designed to make managing risk and safety on oil installations easier, by providing control and visibility to rig personnel and management so that they are aware of the status of their installation at any given time.  The program will receive one of the prestigious ‘Spotlight on New Technology’ awards at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) to be held in Houston in May.

By deploying the DOPP system, operators can implement a tailored dropped object awareness program, with a full inventory of all equipment located in specific rig-zones. The system is deployed along with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and step-by-step guidance. This allows operators to have the confidence and peace of mind of regulatory compliance and the ability to demonstrate this with objective evidence of safety, risk and corrosion and integrity control.

The companies believe that combining SCM’s experience and client base within oil and gas production with OES’ expertise with global drilling operators, and integrating their respective ‘flagship’ solutions, is a natural progression, and aligns both sectors. 

“The OES Dropped Object solution is truly innovative – all platforms currently deploying the system are achieving excellent results,” said Ian Cordingley, managing director of Strategic Corrosion Management. “We see this as an area of increasing focus on the production side of the industry, which has some catching up to do in those respects. Similarly, on the drilling side, improved fabric maintenance management and compliance is a growing requirement. First Subsea gains ABS mooring connector approval

Subsea mooring specialist, First Subsea, has achieved American Bureau of Shipping ABS 2009 Approval for its larger R4 steel forgings up to 562mm diameter.

According to First Subsea, these are the largest diameter forgings to have received the approval, and set the benchmark for Offshore Mooring Accessories with forged bars to the requirements of ‘ABS Guide for Offshore Mooring Chain (2009)’, section 1.9 Special Subsea Mooring Connectors.

The ABS 2009 Certification of Offshore Mooring Chain (updated 2014) specifies the requirements for materials, design, manufacture, and testing of offshore mooring chain and accessories, including special subsea mooring connectors, intended to be used for temporary and permanent mooring systems. 

The approval applies to First Subsea's range of Ballgrab ball and taper mooring connectors manufactured from steel grade 4330V forgings up to 562mm outside diameter.  The subsea mooring connectors can be used with R3, R3S, R4, R4S & R5 grade chain and shackle.

The ABS 2009 Approval builds on First Subsea's investment in research into large scale steel forgings. In collaboration with the University of Sheffield's Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering (IMMPETUS), the company leads the world in research into the manufacture and testing of 4330V large scale steel forgings. 

The company's research was instrumental in the development of the steel grade 4330V, and in assisting ABS in specifying the optimum sample testing location for assessing the forging's mechanical properties and Charpy impact values. 

“It has been a smooth transition from 510mm to 562mm diameter to achieve the ABS approval. Customers can be assured of the quality and engineering integrity of First Subsea's connectors as operators look to extend the life of their deepwater permanent moorings, Greg Campbell-Smith, global business development manager, First Subsea said. “The mechanical values we achieved from our latest testing indicated we could be offering R4S grade material over 500mm in the near future.”

Sterling drops out of Ambilobe, off Madagascar

Sterling Energy UK has issued a notice of withdrawal from the Ambilobe block, offshore Madagascar to its joint venture partner Pura Vida Mauritius.

Following the withdrawal, Sterling will cease to be the operator of the Ambilobe block.

The withdrawal is anticipated to be completed by the end of July 2016. The company does not expect to incur any material costs associated with the withdrawal.

Sterling has held an interest in the Ambilobe Block since 2004 and recently completed a fully carried 1175sq km discretionary 3D survey in 2015.

“Given the challenging commercial landscape, we have made the disciplined decision to exit, focusing on shorter cycle revenue generating assets,” Eskil Jersing, Sterling CEO said.

Last month, Sterling announced its withdrawal from the Block C-3 joint venture, offshore Mauritania.

3D Oil opts for Otway farm-out

Australia’s 3D Oil has commenced a farm-out process for its Otway Basin permit T/49P, offshore Tasmania.

In T/49P, 3D Oil is the operator and holds 70% interest, along with joint venture partner Beach Energy (30%).

T/49P is located immediately southeast of the largest producing gas field in the Otway Basin and contains a number of prospective features for gas exploration, according to the company. It covers an area of 4960sq km in about 100m water depth.

The north of the permit is now covered by 974sq km of modern 3D seismic, while the area to the south remains lightly explored covered by a broad grid of 2D seismic data of varying vintages.

The permit is now in Year 3 having met the Year 2 permit commitment with the acquisition and processing of the Flanagan 3D seismic survey. An application for suspension and extension of Year 3 to allow finalization of permit mapping has been submitted to NOPTA, 3D Oil said.

3D Oil's estimate for prospective resources in T/49P is 6.82 Tcf (best estimate) with the Flanagan Prospect alone 1.38 Tcf (best estimate). The Flanagan feature is defined on state-of-the-art 3D seismic and represents an exciting ready-to-drill prospect which is considered to be an analogue, albeit larger, to the adjacent Thylacine gas field.

UNITECH deploys 3000th UH-500 Connector at Moho

Subsea distribution systems specialist UNITECH has deployed its 3000th UH-500 Series connector on the Total E&P Congo-operated MOHO Nord subsea project, located around 75km off the coast of Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo. 

First introduced in 1996, the UH-500 was developed as a leaner alternative to clamp connectors, allowing quicker connections offshore. Comprising a male receptacle and female stab connector, it is used for a range of subsea applications including gas lift, acid injection, scale squeeze, methanol / MEG injection and electrical connections.

On the MOHO Nord project, over 200 UH-500 connectors: UH-550 (2in) and UH-575 (3in) for chemical injection and gas lift respectively are used on umbilical flow lines, risers, and for permanent installation on manifolds and XTs. The pressure containing body materials are forged to shape and tested to conform with the Total 25% Cr Duplex Forging requirements. The UNITECH UH-500 male receptacles were installed on manifolds and XTs, and female stab connectors attached to gas lift / chemical injection jumpers.

“The UH-500 Series was the first of our game changing technologies that enabled quicker and more resilient subsea connections,” Bernt Hellesoe, chairman, UNITECH Offshore said. “The adaptability of the design lends itself to a wide range of critical subsea connection applications, a notable example being the OSPRAG (Oil Spill Prevention & Response Advisory Group) Rescue Cap kill line using a 15K psi, UH-575 connector.”

UNITECH’s UH-500 Series connectors are available in sizes up to 4in nominal, and with metal-to-metal primary seals, the connectors are designed for pressures up to 20K psi.

Italian firm F.lli Righini has been awarded a new contract by BP for four umbilical handling and lay packages in the Caspian region.

The contract, awarded by BP's Shah Deniz business unit, is for the Shah Deniz Phase 2 project in the Caspian Sea.

The scope of work includes design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing and site supervision for four separate umbilical lay packages. 

The first will be installed on a subsea construction vessel and will comprise one 1200-ton carousel, one spooling tower with 5-ton tensioner, one horizontal lay system with 50-ton tensioner, and well as electric and hydraulic power units and control unit. 

A second package will be installed on barges. Each will comprise of a 1100-ton carousel, spooling tower with 5-ton tensioner, diesel power generator, electrical and hydraulic units and control unit. 

In addition, the firm will provide an onshore umbilical storage package, including a 3500-ton carousel, loading tower, diesel power generator, umbilical roller tracks, 90° slack accumulators, 7-ton tensioner, and electrical and hydraulic units and control unit.

Petrobras extends Technip base contract

Technip has signed an additional four-year extension of its five-year initial contract signed in January 2011 with Petrobras for its Flexible Pipes Logistic Base (BAVIT), in Vitória, Brazil.

The scope covers storage, handling, inspection, testing, load-out (two simultaneous vessel load-out points), internal cleaning and maintenance of flexibles pipes. The base has a 300t handling capacity, storage capacity for 220 reels and serves as the main load-out point for all pre-salt flexible pipes.

Adriano Novitsky, President of Technip in Brazil, commented: “Technip is very proud of this contract. In 2016, the logistic base has reached the significant milestone of eight years of operation without lost time injury. This achievement demonstrates that the culture of HSE has become sustainable and the renewal of this contract is a demonstration that we have been performing as expected by our client, ensuring high standards of quality and safety in the operations”.

This award recognizes Technip’s position in Brazil leveraging its full integration, which covers engineering, fabrication, logistic and installation.

Vericor to launch TF50F turbine

Vericor Power Systems has developed a new version of the TF Series gas turbine, for pump, compression and portable power generation applications.

Rated at over 5000 hp, the TF50F gas turbine is changing the process of hydraulic fracturing, making it cleaner and more cost effective, Vericor said.

The TF50F combines features from both of Vericor’s marine and industrial gas turbine product lines, making a gas turbine that is ideally suited for oil field applications, in particular, pump drive and electric power generation.

The most significant addition is the ability of the engine to operate on both gas and liquid fuel, and to be able to changeover from one fuel to the other while operating.

Datum360 bags Culzean software gig

Maersk Oil has awarded Datum360 a four-year contract to implement Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions for the Culzean development in the UK North Sea.

The key component of the solution, PIM360, will be at the centre of Culzean’s engineering data management.

Datum360 software has been used for the issuing, maintenance and creation of a tagging and numbering specification together with the matching of these to specific documents which will capture work completed on all the platforms and vessel.

Using an integrated solution is the smartest and most economically advantageous way that owner operators should work.  Not only does it enhance the consistency of data, but it also increases overall productivity and creates a more structured approach to managing vast amounts of project information Datum360 said.

As well as implementing Datum360’s DMaaS (Data Management as a Service), Maersk has also used the company to advise its data control center on processes and software and currently to train staff on engineering information systems.  

“Maersk is really driving to increase its efficiencies and implement improvements to their engineering information management, which will play a significant role in reducing costs and saving the company time,” Steve Wilson, CEO and co-founder of Datum360 said. “It is estimated that up to 60% of an engineer’s time can be spent moving and organising data on major assets like offshore oil platforms and vessels.  If the systems they use are cobbled together, ineffective and or simply don’t interlink then this time is completely wasted.”
