Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine announced they invested millions of dollars in the purchase of an American company and in a new facility in Singapore.

Sembcorp’s wholly-owned subsidiary Jurong Shipyard has acquired Houston-based SSP Offshore for US$21 million.
SSP Offshore specializes in the design, engineering and delivery of floating production and drilling solutions that includes its SSP Floater technology and the company’s portfolio of satellite services platform (SSP) solutions.
Sembcorp Marine says that with this acquisition, it will enable the company to offer a suite of innovative solutions to cater to customers’ diverse operating requirements. In addition, with the strategic expansion into circular-based floaters, Sembcorp says they are well-positioned to tap on new opportunities and expand its market share in the exploration and production, accommodation and logistics support segments within the offshore industry.
SSP floaters are built for robust operation and can be permanently moored on location during extreme or harsh sea conditions. Their circular hull design offers advantages and fabrication flexibility as it can be built using simple block construction methods without the need for a graving dock. SSP floaters also eliminate the need for turret, swivel or CALM buoy facilities for production and storage operations or offloading.

Sembcorp is also investing about $175.7 million (S$222 million) in a multi-functional steel fabrication facility at its Sembmarine Integrated Yard @ Tuas in Singapore.
Sembcorp says the new steel fabrications facility will improve automation and productivity and offer a streamlined, seamless and extensively automated production process from steel stockyard to final assembly and finishing shop.
Completion is expected in 3Q 2015. The facility is expected to have a tonnage capacity of more than three times that of the existing hull shop at the Tanjong Kling yard.
In addition, Sembcorp announced that construction on phase II of the 345,000sq m Sembmarine Integrated Yard @ Tuas. Plans include to build an additional three dry docks on the phase II site. Two will be 150,000 dead weight tonnage capacity and the third will be a dedicated offshore dry dock for offshore rig building, upgrades and repairs. When phase II is complete, Sembcorp will have seven dry docks in operation including the four very large crude carrier docks in phase I.
