Murphy Oil has encountered oil shows at its Dalmatian South exploratory well DC 134-1 in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, partner Ecopetrol announced on 1 November 2012.

The Colombian NOC said the discovery was confirmed by electric logs and fluid samples after the well and a planned sidetrack were drilled. Ecopetrol said further geological and geophysical studies will be conducted to determine the resource potential of the entire Dalmatian area.

The DC 134-1 well was drilled by the semisubmersible Noble Jim Day in water depths of 6,394 ft inside the DeSoto Canyon area, approximately 70 off Louisiana's coast. The discovery is the second for Ecopetrol in the Gulf of Mexico this year.

Murphy Oil operates the Dalmatian license with 70% interest. Ecopetrol America holds the remaining 30%.
