Lundin has spud an appraisal well on the northeastern flank of the Johan Sverdrup discovery, the company announced on 13 November 2013.

The 16/2-16 well will be used to gather information on the recently drilled 16/2-13A in PL501 and 16/2-10 well in PL265. Due to its location on the flank, Lundin anticipates a limited oil column.

Lundin said it intends to establish the depth, quality and thickness of the Jurassic reservoir sequences located 3km away from the appraisal. The drilling will also investigate reservoir quality and oil water contact.

‘These wells (16/2-13A and 16/2-10) both found excellent reservoir and deeper oil water contacts than seen elsewhere in the Johan Sverdrup discovery,' Lundin said in a release. ‘The (appraisal) well will, however, provide valuable information on depth conversion at this location as well as a better understanding of aquifer support.'

The 16/2-16 appraisal well is being drilled by the semisubmersible rig Transocean Winner. Its planned total depth is approximately 2,250 m below mean sea level. The program is expected to take 50 days.

Lundin operates PL501, which includes 16/2-16, with 40% interest. Its partners include Statoil (40%), and Maersk (20%).
