Norvarg gas discovery 'extensive'

Appraisal drilling on the Barents Sea Norvarg gas discovery has confirmed the “extensive” nature of the field, it has been announced.

The well (7225/3-2), in license PL 535 offshore Norway, was drilled in 377m deep water by Total using the Leiv Eiriksson semisubmersible drilling rig.

A statement issued by partners on PL 535 said: “The results of the appraisal well have confirmed the extensive nature of the Norvarg discovery and the presence of movable gas throughout the Kobbe reservoir, with no water contacts seen.”

Partner Det Norske said that the appraisal well encountered variable reservoir quality, more sand, and better porosities than in the 7225/3-1 well. But, it said the reservoir productivity was somewhat lower than expected and that initial assessment of the appraisal well results indicated that the resource estimate may have to be reduced, compared to the initial evaluation from the discovery well.

Norvarg was discovered in 2011, about 275 km north of the Hammerfest LNG plant on Melkøya, and was at the time estimated to contain 10-50billion cu m of gas, equivalent to about 63-315MM boe.

In the appraisal well, two production tests were carried out in the upper and lower parts of the Kobbe Formation, with the well flowing at a maximum gross production rate of 175,000 cu m/d (about 6.2MM cu ft/d) on a 52/64in choke.

Data acquisition, wire line logging, coring and sampling was carried out and the well. It was completed with down hole gauges capable of transmitting data after abandonment, which will give further information about the extent of the reservoir.

The well will now be plugged and abandoned.

The partners in the license are operator Total E&P Norge, with 40% equity interest, North Energy (20% interest), Ithaca Petroleum Norge (13%), Statoil (10%), Det Norske (10%), and Rocksource Exploration Norway (7%). Statoil and Det Norske’s stakes are pending government approval.
