BP gets Valhall extentions

The Petroleum Safety Authority of Norway (PSA) is extending BP Norge’s use of the Valhall drilling platform (DP) and production and compression platform (PCP) facilities until 31 December 2023.

Valhall is a giant oilfield located in the southern Norwegian North Sea in 70m water depth.

According to the PSA, BP is using the DP facility as a wellhead platform until the wells are decommissioned, plugged and closed down. The PCP production facility is no longer active, however, the company wants to use it as a bridge support for the bridges between the DP and wellhead platform facilities.

The PSA’s consent is being given on certain preconditions related to load analyses and manning criteria.

In December, the PSA denied BP’s request to extend the operating life of the Valhall living quarter platform (QP). Its reason was that BP failed to define realistic acceptance criteria for non-linear analyses.  BP had filed for consent to extend the QP until 31 December 2017, and thereafter as an end platform for escape and evacuation until going out of service. However, the QP was shut down on 31 December 2014.
