Energean in Greek 3D seismic survey

Energean Oil & Gas announced that it is to conduct a new 3D seismic survey over the Prinos oil field and its surrounding licenses, in the Gulf of Kavala, northeastern Greece.

The 3D survey will cover an area of 400sq km and will last approximately three weeks.

Through the new 3D acquisition, Energean aims to improve the seismic imaging of the Prinos field and the satellite oil fields Prinos North and Epsilon. The company intends to improve imaging of the prospects already identified and identify new prospects with the objective of increasing the hydrocarbons reserves in the Prinos Basin.

Energean has appointed Dolphin Geophysical to carry out the 3D acquisition project. Dolphin operates a fleet consisting of seven new generation, high capacity seismic vessels which have been involved in most of the major exploration provinces around the world. In the Gulf of Kavala, Energean will use the 3D vessel Polar Marquis and the source vessel Artemis Arctic to perform a 3D survey over existing producing fields. Coverage will be further enhanced by a complex undershooting operation which will be undertaken.

“Energean is developing the 30 MMbbl (2P) reserves through a US$200 million investing program in the Gulf of Kavala,” said Mathios Rigas, chairman and CEO of Energean. “Our company is also working towards turning its 28 MMbbl of 2C resources into reserves.”

The new 3D acquisition is the first in the area since 1997 and will help Energean in identifying new prospects in the Prinos Basin and further explore and develop Greece’s natural resources. The company, currently the only oil producer of oil and gas in Greece, say that they will continue to invest despite the negative climate in the country.
