Suncor's Niobe comes up empty

Published

Suncor Energy will plug and abandon the Niobe exploration prospect after failing to find significant hydrocarbons, according to partner Trap Oil.

Niobe is located in license P.1989, in Blocks 12/26b and 27b in the UK North Sea.

The exploration well was drilled to its target depth of 1525m (5005ft) measured depth below rotary table (MDRT) or 1484m (4871ft) true vertical depth subsea (TVDSS) within the Late Jurassic Heather Formation and as such has fulfilled the license obligation.

The well achieved its primary target in the Burns Sandstone Member within the late Jurassic interval. The well penetrated good quality sands with no significant hydrocarbons. There are no plans to conduct a drill stem test and the well is to be plugged and abandoned.

The partners in license P.1889 are operator Suncor Energy UK, (49.5%), Norwegian Energy Co. UK (22.5%) and Trap Oil (28%).
