Statoil is bringing the Transocean Spitsbergen semisubmersible back to the waters to drill a wildcat well in the Snedrid Nord prospect, after gaining consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA).

The Norwegian giant will drill exploration well 6706/12-2 located in Block 6706/12, in its operated production license 218 in the Norwegian North Sea. The well is located 150km north of Norne at 1312m water depth.
According to the PSA, drilling is set to begin in February 2015 for 33 days, depending on whether a discovery is made.
In November, Statoil announced the suspension of the Transocean Spitsbergen and Songa Trym for the remainder of 2014, with a possible extension. The suspension was due to overcapacity in Statoil’s rig portfolio and unsuccessful attempts to mature alternative rig assignments. Statoil is under a contract with the rig to the start of 3Q 2015 with.
Statoil decided to extend the suspension of the Songa Trym in December, along with COSL Pioneer and Scarabeo 5.
