Maersk Intrepid heading for Westcon

Norway's Westcon is to start its 20th year as a rig modification yard by welcoming the world’s largest jack-up rig Maersk Intrepid (pictured).

The newbuild jackup, which built at Keppel FELS' yard in Singapore for Denmark's Maersk Drilling and was completed in March, is due to arrive on June 7. It will then go on to work for Total on the Martin Linge field.

At 206.8m-long, it is the world’s largest jackup rig, says Westcon. Read more: Maersk Drilling takes delivery of Maersk Intrepid

Maersk Intrepid is planning to stay at Westcon Yards for 50-60 days to train the crew, install third part equipment and to test the systems on board before the rig will work for Total at the Martin Linge field.

Westcon's first job was work on the Safe Britannia at Westcon Yards in Olen 20 years ago.

The company has now invested more than NOK600 million developing the yard and the organization, and more than 100 rig projects have been completed.

“Through 20 years we have invested in and developed unique competence, routines and project management tools that make us able to plan the rig projects in a good way and by this give our customers predictability in project’s implementation”, says Malvin Eide, manager for rig repairs at Westcon Yards.

Investment has included preparation of the seabed outside the quay to provide jack-up rigs with safe moorings.
