This year’s forum will feature prominent keynote speakers Erik Milito - director of upstream and industry operations, American Petroleum Institute (API) – on Wednesday, 10 August; and industry veteran, Charlie Williams – executive director for the Center for Offshore Safety (COS) – on Thursday, 11 August.

At API, Milito covers regulatory and legislative matters related to domestic exploration and production, including access to domestic oil and natural gas resources both onshore and offshore.

Prior to his current position, Milito served as managing counsel covering a host of legal issues, including oil and gas leasing, royalty, environmental, fuels, transportation, safety, and civil justice reform. He has also testified numerous times before Senate and House committees on energy issues, and has published various articles on US energy development.

Williams spent 40 years at Shell, serving as chief scientist for the company's well engineering and production technology division before assuming his role with COS in March 2012. The organization, created in the aftermath of the Macondo disaster and supported by API, has focused on a number of safety-based initiatives regarding well control and completions as well as third party auditing.

Williams has led the creation of COS and received the Offshore Technology Conference Special Citation plus the Society of Petroleum Engineers HSSE Award for this work. Most recently he received the Offshore Energy Center – Pioneer Award for lifetime achievement.

Agenda highlights

DIF kicks off on Tuesday, 9 August with a half-day workshop on subsea well plugging and abandonment (P&A), which aims to help attendees understand the current US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) regulations for subsea well abandonment in comparison to the capabilities of riserless and riser-based well intervention systems.  The session will be led by subject matter experts from LLOG, OneSubsea, Baker Hughes, GE Oil & Gas, Blue Ocean Technologies, Aker Solutions, BP, SeaNation, FTO Services, DOF Subsea, and FMC Technologies.

On Wednesday, the forum begins with a panel discussion on industry issues, challenges and opportunities. Other session topics will center on innovative equipment geared to enhance capability and integrity in deepwater applications; how vessels and rigs are operated to meet current intervention market demands, and a presentation of intervention case studies.

Also on Wednesday, the forum’s advisory board will present the second annual Innovation Award to a new recipient. Last year, DIF recognized Island Offshore’s collaboration with Baker Hughes on open water coiled tubing.

On Thursday, the forum will tackle such topics as hydraulic intervention – innovations and best practices, regulatory updates from BSEE and the US Coast Guard, and more case studies on topics such as decommissioning, rigless intervention, multi-WOCS systems, and rapid response to Tier 1 events.

DIF is presented by OE and owned by OE's publisher, AtComedia.
