Premier spuds latest Falklands target

Premier Oil has spudded its latest Falklands Islands exploration well.

The 14/20-2  Isobel - 2 well in the North Falklands basin is a second attempt on the Isobel Deep area, after drilling in May hit oil shows in a suspected high pressure formation, according to 24% stake partner Rockhopper Exploration.

As well as testing Isobel Deep, the well, on license PL004a, is also planned to intercept four other fans within the complex; Irene, Doreen Elaine South and Isobel.

The well is about 4.2km from the Isobel Deep well (14/20-1), which had penetrated the first 24m of the Isobel Deep reservoir.

The Elaine/Isobel fan complex, based on the operator’s estimates, has multiple reservoir targets and gross, mean un-risked resources of 400 MMbbl, according to 40% stake partner Falkland Oil & Gas.

Isobel is part of a six-well drilling campaign by Premier Oil and fellow Falklands explorer Noble Energy.

Premier Oil’s first exploration well in its 2.1 billion bbl 2015 Falkland’s drilling campaign has confirmed the extension of the giant Sea Lion discovery.

The 14/15b-5 Zebedee exploration well, using the Eirik Raude semisubmersible drilling rig, was targeting 61-432 MMbbl gross unrisked resources, according to a recent Premier Oil investor presentation. The well intersected 79ft of oil bearing reservoir in Zebedee sands and 55ft of gas bearing reservoir in previously undrilled Hector sands, in multiple Cretaceous formations.

Rockhopper CEO Sam Moody said: “The second well on the Isobel/Elaine complex represents an exciting chance to significantly increase the volume of proven oil in the basin. Not only does it give us another opportunity to explore the Isobel Deep fan, but also a number of further fan bodies in the Isobel area which have never previously been drilled.”
