OMC opens its doors

More than 14,000 oil industry professionals are expected to descend on the Italian city of Ravenna this week for the bi-annual Offshore Mediterranean Conference, starting today (25).

The city is home to the country’s offshore oil and gas industry, as well as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ravenna was the seat of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and then of Byzantine Italy until the 8th century. As a result, it has a unique collection of early Christian mosaics and monuments.

However, this week, the key themes in the spotlight are expected to revolve around the availability of resources and technologies to improve production (such as enhanced oil recovery), security and safety of operations from a technological and regulatory point of view post-Macondo, and the inevitable stability of the market – oil prices crises and effects on companies.

The conference will see 175 technical papers presented, including 43 papers in the Digital Poster Area, from 19 different countries. In all, there will be 34 technical sessions, one plenary session, two special sessions, workshops and side events, a youth program and social events.

The special sessions will focus on the growing area of enhanced oil recovery, as well as safety in light of Macondo.

This year’s exhibition area has been expanded by 30%, to 25,000sq m and, for a bit of fun, the organizers have included a selfie point. Visitors will be encouraged to take at selfie at the point, in Hall 4, with the show’s resident ‘oil worker,’ then post it on OMC’s Facebook page. The post with the most likes will win a prize!
