Statoil adds to Krafla reserves

Norwegian exploration firm Statoil has made a 6-9MMboe discovery on the Krafla North prospect in production license (PL) 035 in the North Sea, according to partner Det Norske, increasing the Krafla area overall estimates to 75-143boe.

The 30/11-10 well, which is about to be completed using the Transocean Leader semisubmersible drilling rig (pictured), encountered an 80m oil column in the Tarbert formation and a 20m oil column in the Etive formation. Both had poorer reservoir properties than expected.

Moveable hydrocarbons were found in the Ness formation in a secondary target, in Middle Jurassic rocks, and reservoir qualities were as expected. No reservoir rocks were encountered in the Upper Tarbert formation, which was also part of the secondary target.

Det Norske says preliminary estimates of the recoverable resources are 6-19MMboe. Together with the discoveries at Krafla, from 2011, of 50-80MMboe, and Askja in 2013, of 19-44MMboe, the total amounts to 75-143MMboe.

The partners in PL 035 and PL 272 will now evaluate the discovery in connection with other discoveries in the two licenses, said Det Norske.

Well 30/11-10 was drilled to a vertical depth of 4054m below sea level in 105m water depth, 1.6km north of the 2011 disocvery well 30/11-8-S. Upon completion of the well, the 30/11-10 A side-track will be drilled on Krafla Main.

Partners in PL 035 are operator Statoil with 50% percent working interest, Svenska Exploration (25%) and Det Norske (25%).
