BassGas JV completes Yolla heavy lift

The Origin Energy-operated BassGas joint venture is one step closer in the BassGas Mid Life Enhancement (MLE) project after completing the Yolla offshore platform heavy lift stage, off southeast Australia.

The Sapura 3000 heavy lift crane vessel installed gas compression and condensate pumping modules into place on the Yolla platform, which is located in Bass Strait, approximately 140km offshore from Kilcunda, Victoria at 80m water depth.

Origin says the module lift is an important first step in Stage 2 of the BassGas MLE project that is aiming to extend the production life of the Yolla field.

The JV is now focused on preparations for drilling the Yolla-5 and Yolla-6 wells, using Seadrill’s West Telesto jackup.

BassGas is due to recommence production later this month and will remain in operation until development drilling activity begins in 1Q 2015. After development drilling is complete, tie-in and commissioning of the modules is scheduled to begin around mid-2015. The JV expects the modules to be commissioned in FY 2016-17.

Once the Yolla-5 and Yolla-6 wells are drilled and tied in, they will extend production from the Yolla field through the BassGas production facility at Lang Lang, Victoria.

At the Yolla platform, gas and liquids are extracted from a sandstone reservoir at over 3km in depth through two wells. Once extracted, the gas and liquids from the Yolla field are transported 150km via an undersea pipeline to the Lang Lang Gas Processing Plant 70km south of Melbourne in Victoria. There, the gas is processed for sale before being transported through the onshore underground gas pipeline to the Victorian Principal Gas Transmission Pipeline near Pakenham, Victoria.

The BassGas project will commercialize gas from the Yolla gas field in Bass Strait and will meet about 10% of Victoria’s current demand for 15 years. BassGas is designed to produce approximately 24 petajoules of sales gas per annum together with 1MM bbl of condensate and 75,000-tonne of LP Gas.

Origin is the operator of the BassGas JV with 42.5% interest. Partners include AWE (35%), Prize Petroleum (11.25%) and Toyota Tsusho Gas E&P Trefoil (11.25%).
