Hess sanctions Stampede

Hess Corp. is moving forward with the US$6 billion development of the Stampede Field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico after a final investment decision was reached.

Stampede, a joint development of the earlier Knotty Head and Pony discoveries, is located in Green Canyon Blocks 468, 511 and 512, approximately 220mi. southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 3500ft of water, and a reservoir depth of 30,000ft.

Hess says the plan initially calls for total of six production wells and four water injection wells from two subsea drill centers tied back to a tension leg platform (TLP). A two-rig drilling program is planned with the first rig beginning operations 4Q 2015. First production is expected in 2018.

The deepwater subsea development will include gross topsides with the capacity to process about 80,000b/d and 100,000b/d of water injection capacity. Hess is estimating recoverable resources in the 300-350MMboe.

According to Hess, it plans to use SMART well technology to maximize production within its complex deepwater wells, one of those being Stampede. SMART wells are equipped with permanent downhole measurement equipment or control valves, or both. The sensors provide valuable well management data.

Hess operates the Stampede Field with 25% interest. Partners includes Chevron’s subsidiary Union Oil Co. of California (25%), Statoil (25%) and Nexen Petroleum Offshore USA Inc. (25%).

In 2013, Wood Group announced it would deliver operations and maintenance services for the Stampede development.
