Petrobras hits oil at Carcará Noroeste

Brazil’s Petróleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) discovered high-quality light oil potential at the third well in the Carcará pre-salt discovery area offshore São Paulo.

The third well, 3-SPS-104DA or Carcará Noroeste, is located in Block BM-S-8 in the Santos basin’s ultra deepwater, 5.5km northwest of the discovery well, and 226km from the coast of São Paulo in 2024m water depth.

Petrobras confirmed the high-quality (31°API) light oil potential of pre-salt reservoirs, where pressure data indicated that it is in the same accumulation as two other wells previously drilled in the area, and also confirmed the westward extension of 4-SPS-86B’s discovery.

The carbonate reservoirs have excellent characteristics and are immediately below the salt layer at a depth of 5870m. A significant oil column of 318m was found and there has been no oil/water contact for this accumulation, Petrobras said.

As part of the discovery evaluation plan, the Brazilian giant will evaluate the productivity of the pre-salt reservoirs with formation tests in the recently completed well 3-SPS-105.

Petrobras expects to complete the Carcará discovery evaluation plan by March 2018.

Light oil pay was also discovered at the second well, Carcará Norte, at the end of May.

Petrobras is the operator of Block BM-S-8 with 66% interest. Partners include Petrogal Brasil (14%), Barra Energia do Brasil Petróleo e Gás (10%) and Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção S.A. (10%).
