Ikon Science debuts Ji-Fi

Ikon Science is launching Ji-Fi (joint impedance and facies inversion), a process that delivers a most accurate and detailed 3D model of complex reservoirs comprising different seismic facies, including shale, brine-filled sand, oil-bearing sand and gas-bearing sand, controlled by depositional or other factors.

The service is a result of five years of joint research with CSIRO in Australia, and with the technical and financial support of Tullow Oil during the last three years.

This new service offering from its QI Solutions centers in London, Houston, Kuala Lumpur and Calgary. This follows on an extended period of training, testing and workflow development.

The technology has already been applied to evaluating challenging reservoirs in many regions and covering formation ages from Permian to Miocene, at depths from 7km to shallower, including unconventional plays in the US. Ikon Science experts in all four centers are now ready to add value to client projects and deliver the best reservoir facies distribution models possible, in an effective and cost efficient manner and with Ikon Science’s well known quality of service.

“Ikon Science had granted Tullow Oil a period of exclusivity for service work as part of our collaboration on this exciting technology; that period has now come to an end,” said Kester Waters, VP, global quantitative interpretation for Ikon Science. “Results from numerous projects to date have demonstrated that Ji-Fi reliably retrieves geologically and geophysically plausible facies and rock property models from seismic data, matching existing well locations, whilst also delivering other significant technical and workflow efficiencies compared to previous generation methods."
