ABS approves Chiyoda LNG concept

Classification and technical services provider ABS has granted an Approval in Principal for Chiyoda Corp.’s floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant and floating storage and regasification unit design concept.

ABS said the concept offers a new approach to delivering new sources of power to remote areas of the world. It is based on existing LNG carriers, which are converted into floating power plants with small (~72 MW) to medium (~400 MW) scale power generation capabilities.

Applying ABS guidance allowed Chiyoda to develop a concept that meets operational demands and advances safety, while reducing construction costs and shortening delivery times, said Chiyoda Corporation Project Manager Toyomitsu Kanai in a 20 June press release.

By supplying electricity directly to land via a heavy duty electrical cable, Chiyoda can offer LNG power generation facilities in remote areas, including islands. It can deliver these facilities by eliminating infrastructures such as LNG receiving facilities and onshore power generation facilities, the company said in a 21 June press release.

In reviewing Chiyoda’s floating LNG power plant concept, ABS said it applied its relevant Rules and Guides to confirm that the conceptual design meets the intent of applicable class requirements, ABS said in a 20 June press statement.

“As the energy mix shifts and global demand for gas increases, concepts like this will reshape how energy is supplied,” said ABS Vice President for Global Gas Solutions Patrick Janssens in the release. “By working closely with Chiyoda, we were able to help them prove the feasibility of this novel and innovative concept.”
