Karoon hits at Kangaroo-2

Australia’s Karoon Gas encountered oil in five separate zones in the Kangaroo-2 appraisal well in the Santos basin, offshore Brazil.

Kangaroo-2 is located approximately 300m updip and 4km south from Kangroo-1 in Block S-M-1165.

A 250m gross oil column was encountered and the well intersected 135m net reservoir pay confirmed by wireline petrophysical logging and sampling. No gas cap was penetrated.

According to Karoon, drilling was completed at a total depth of 23690m below rotary table (mRT) where five separate oil bearing reservoir sand intervals over the interval 1,660mRT to 2,000mRT in the Palaeocene and Maastrichtian age formation were penetrated, with each interval having a separate oil/water contact.

Of the five, three oil columns were found within the Palaeocene section and two in the Maastrichtian section.

Karoon expects the wireline logging program that is underway to be completed in the coming days, with a production test to follow.

Information gathered from Kangaroo-2 will be used to assess the commerciality of the Kangaroo oil field and will be the basis for the front end engineering and design (FEED) phase bringing the project a step closer to commerciality.

Karoon says all operations on the well are expected to be completed within the next four weeks before the rig moves to drill and evaluate the Kangaroo West prospect approximately 2k distant on the western side of Kangaroo salt structure.

Kangaroo-2 was spudded in early November and is the first well in the Santos basin exploration and appraisal drilling campaign.

Karoon announced its drilling campaign plans in October, that consists of two to four appraisal and exploration wells to be drilled. The Karoon-operated wells, S-M-1037, S-M-1101, S-M-1102, S-M-1165 and S-M-1166, are all located in the Santos basin and will be drilled using the Olinda Star for the entire campaign, which is expected to continue into 1H 2015.

The second well in the program is the Kangaroo West-1 exploration well, targeting a net unrisked prospective resource of 330MMbbls. Due to the large size and proximity to Kangaroo, a successful outcome at Kangaroo West-1 would materially add to any possible development of the Kangaroo oil field.

The play type for Kangaroo West-1 is proven at Kangaroo-1 with the intersection of a 76m gross oil column and oil recovered to surface from wireline DSTs. Kangaroo West-1 is located on the western flank of the same salt structure as Kangaroo-1 and has the same trap type and reservoir and seal intervals that have been mapped into the prospect from surrounding wells.

Karoon is the operator of of the five wells in Block S-M-1165 with a 65% interest along with partner Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (35%).
