BHI international rig count for September 2014

Baker Hughes Inc. issued the September 2014 international rotary drilling rig count today, showing a total of 1323 rigs operating internationally in September 2014, outside of the US & Canada.

The worldwide rig count for September 2014 was 3659, up 17 from the 3642 counted in August 2014 (+<1%), and up 228 from the 3431 counted in September 2013 (+6.6% year-over-year increse).

International activity in September was down 16 rigs from the 1339 rigs drilling in August 2014 (-1%), and up 39 rigs from the 1284 rigs drilling in September 2013, a 3% year-over-year increase.    

Most of the international rigs counted in September were drilling on land (990 rigs, 75%), while 333 rigs (25%) were drilling offshore.

Overall drilling, land + offshore, was led by the Middle East (- rigs in September, down from - rigs in August; % monthly decrease) and Latin America (- rigs in September, down from - rigs in August; % monthly decrease).

International offshore

The international offshore rig count for September 2014 was 333, up 18 from the 315 counted in August 2014 (+5.7%), and up 20 from the 313 counted in September 2013 (+6.3% year-over-year). 

Europe had 50 rigs drilling offshore in September, up from 45 rigs in August (+11%), but down 1 rig from the 51 rigs that were drilling in September 2013 (-2% y-o-y).

In the North Sea, 36 rigs were drilling in September, up from 31 rigs in August (+16%), but down 6 rigs from the 42 rigs that were turning to the right in September 2013 (-14%).

Offshore Middle East, 44 rigs were drilling in September, up from 40 rigs in August (+10%), and up two rigs from the 42 rigs that were drilling in September 2013 (+4.7% y-o-y).

There were 39 rigs drilling off Africa in September, up 1 rig from the 38 rigs that were drilling in August (+2.6%), and up 4 rigs from the 35 that were drilling in September 2013 (+11.4%).

In Latin America, 81 rigs were drilling offshore in September, up 8 rigs from 73 in August (+11%), but down 4 rigs from the 85 that were drilling in September 2013 (-4.7%).
