Vard’s dual fuel vessel gets patent

Vard Marine has been awarded a US Patent for their design and engineering of a Dual Fuel Vessel.

The company also announced that later this year; the first of six 5100DWT vessels to be built under this patent will be delivered.

The 5100DWT vessels represent the first US flag vessels able to operate exclusively on natural gas or diesel fuel oil.

The patent was filed three years ago on 13 September 2011.Vard Marine says the patent is applicable to a small size, self-propelled floating vessel having a dual fuel system, monohull or catamaran hull shape with an overall length ranging from 60m to 170m, azimuthing thrusters, and with LNG tank capacities between 100cbm and 1200cbm.

The vessels were designed by Vard Marine and built by Gulf Coast Shipyard Group for Harvey Gulf International Marine.

In August, Vard Holdings acquired STX Canada Marine for approximately US$10.6 million. The new acquisition will be fully integrated with Vard Marine and operate under the Vard Marine name.
