Chevron awards Downer Gorgon contract

Downer EDI Ltd. secured a contract on the Chevron-operated Gorgon project, located on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Western Australia.

The US$170 million contract is for an initial term of 12 months, with extension options. It includes various jobs including structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and civil.

With the award of the Gorgon contract, Downer expects to create up to 400 Australian jobs with the majority of them located at Barrow Island.

Chevron says Gorgon includes the construction of 15.6MTPA liquefied natural gas plant on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to supply 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia.

According to the supermajor, Gorgon is 83% complete and is one of the world’s largest natural gas projects and the largest single resource development in Australia’s history. The project is developing the Gorgon and Jansz-lo gas fields, located within the Greater Gorgon area, between 130 and 220km off the northwest coast.

The JV is working to reduce the project’s overall greenhouse gas emissions between 3.4 and 4.1 million tonnes per year by investing approximately $2 billion in the design construction of the world’s largest commercial-scale CO2 injection facility.

Chevron owns a 47.3% interest in Gorgon with joint venture ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417%).
