The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) on Wednesday granted Statoil Petroleum AS the exploration drilling permit for the Kayak prospect in the Barents Sea.

Statoil will use the Songa Enabler to drill wildcat well 7219/9-2 in production license 532, NPD said in a 7 June press statement. The well will be drilled about 23km southwest of the discovery well 7220/8-1 in production license 532. The license area consists of blocks 7219/9, 7220/4, 7220/5, 7220/7 and 7220/8.

Statoil is operator of the production license with 50% interest. Its partners are Eni Norge AS with 30% and Petoro AS with 20%.

In April, Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority gave Statoil permission to drill the exploration well at the Kayak prospect.
